Game 1 - Gothams 11 - Elizabeth Athletic Club 5

Game 2 - Elizabeth Athletic Club 22 - Gothams 7

Juniper Valley Park, Queens, NY - 9/8/2007 - The Gothams returned to Queens to play this fine game of base ball on a bright and sunny day for the first time in 3 years to the very same fields Current Gothams Trolley and Slider played on as a child. This homecoming began quite victoriously as the Gothams defeated the Elizabeth Athletic Club in the first match by a tally of 11-5 as Stacks Chicagoed the Elizabeth Club for 6 of the 9 innings with assistance from a plethora of fine field work behind him. The 2nd contest, however, was quite different as the Elizabeth Club struck at will against the Gotham pitching and defeated the Mighty Gothams by the lopsided total of 22-7. Game 1 - 1864 Rules:

The Gothams return to Queens was met with great fanfare and the Gothams did not disappoint in the opening game. Right from the start the Gothams displayed their enthusiasm with 2 aces in the top of the first inning. Slider reached 1st base safely on a hit after one hand was down, quickly swiped 2nd base and came all the way home to tally his ace on a monstrous 3-base hit by Gotham shortstop Dream. Shoeless followed with a one-base hit to allow Dream to tally the Gothams 2nd ace. Stacks began his masterful pitching performance by Chicagoing the Elizabeth Club in the 1st and again in the 2nd behind a spectacular double play turned when 3rd base-tender Wickets fielded a daisy cutter cleanly threw to 2nd base-tender Rugs for the 1st hand and on to 1st base-tender Shoeless for the final out of the inning. Evan, the Elizabeth pitcher also Chicagoed the Gothams for 2 consecutive innings to keep the Gothams at bay long enough for his strikers to finally figure out Stacks pitching to the tune of tallying 3 aces in the 3rd frame to take a 3-2 lead. It should be noted that the damage would have been much worse were it not for a fine play by Gotham center fielder Slider's amazing catch of a ball on a bound after it had already sailed over his head!

The Gothams regained the lead in the 4th inning thanks to one-base hit by TC and a hard line drive down the left field line struck by Shoeless for a home run that tallied 2 aces and put the Gothams ahead 4-3. Stacks continued to baffle the Elizabeth strikers by enticing them to foul the ball back to the Gotham catcher Wombat for several outs, but no aces during the 4th and 5th frames, but Evan was also thwarting any Gotham aces with his fine hurling as well, so when the Elizabeth Club tallied an ace in the bottom of the 6th it tied the score at 4-4 after 6 innings.

The tide then turned in the Gothams favor in the 7th in a familiar way when TC reached on a one-base hit, pursued an act of thievery of 2nd base and tallied an ace on a 2-base hit from Dream. Shoeless then continued his excellent day at bat with a 3-base hit to score Dream and tallied his own ace on a one-base hit by Stacks to give the Gothams a 7-4 lead which they were not to relinquish on this day. Stacks followed hit hitting display with another well-pitched inning retiring all 3 Elizabeth strikers in order. Trolley, Tip Top, Star, and Wickets provided 2 more aces in the 8th through one-base hits, bases on balls, and acts of thievery to expand on their lead as they could begin to smell the scent of victory. Stacks again Chicagoed the Elizabeth Club in the 8th, but this time with the aid of a great throw by Wombat to catch Quickstep stealing 3rd base. A 3-base hit by TC, a one-base hit by Dream, and a 2-base hit by Stacks tallied 2 more Gotham aces in the 9th to complete the Gotham scoring. Stacks allowed one more Elizabeth ace in the bottom of the 9th, but when TC made the catch of a bounded ball in left field for the final out, the Gothams had secured both their 4th victory of the season and their first ever against the Elizabeth Athletic Club…Huzzah!!!

Game 2 - 1891 Rules:

The 2nd contest of the day appeared to begin in the same fashion as the first as Wickets, Dream, Shoeless, and Wombat all combined one-base hits to tally 2 aces and take a 2-0 lead, but from there on this match would not follow as the 1st match had. The Gothams proceeded to have their worst "Gotham Inning" in club history. El Presidente made his return to the team by making his pitching debut, but the Elizabeth strikers were more than ready for him. They hit several of his pitches hard where the Gotham fielders were not and when they were hit where the Gothams were, the Gotham fielders avoided the ball like the black plague. Combined with a few bases on balls and a couple hit batsmen 10 Elizabeth strikers tallied an ace before Trolley removed his catchers mask and made a pitching change. Wickets came in to pitch and did not fair much better at the start as he surrendered 6 more aces, meaning that the Elizabeth Club tallied 16 aces to take an insurmountable 16-2 lead after only only inning had been played!

The Gothams did have more battle left in them though. After one hand was down the Gotham Catcher Trolley, who had nearly passed out watching all the Elizabeth aces tally in the 1st, reached on a one-base hit and came all the way around the bases in the slowest manor possible to tally an ace on 2 Elizabeth errors. In fact, he nearly collapsed at the feet of Elizabeth catcher Mike. The Gothams then took advantage of wildness by Evan, the Elizabeth hurler, who either walked or hit with a pitch 6 of the next 7 Gotham strikers plus a one base hit to Shoeless, which resulted in an additional 4 Gotham aces bringing the total tally to 16-7 in favor of Elizabeth. Unfortunately for the Mighty Gothams that would be the last of their offensive outbursts as Evan would Chicago the Gothams for the remainder of the contest.

Defensively the Gothams would improve though. Wickets Chicagoed the Elizabeth Club in each of the 2nd and 3rd innings, which was highlighted by Gotham shortstop Dream single-handedly shutting down Elizabeth in the 2nd. He first handled a hard daisy cutter, stepped on 2nd and threw to 1st for a double play and capped that off by a fine play on a pop fly to end the inning. Wickets retired Elizabeth in order in the 3rd before the 2nd Gotham inning struck in the 4th in which the Gotham fielders avoided the ball at a phenomenal rate and allowed 6 more aces to tally. Dream relieved Wickets in the 5th and Chicagoed Elizabeth in his one inning of work, but after the Gothams failed to tally an ace in their half of the 6th frame, the game was called due to darkness and Elizabeth came out victorious by a final tally of 22-7.

Overall, 2 fine games of base ball were played in the beautiful county of Queens between these 2 base ball clubs to the enjoyment of many fans in Juniper Valley Park. Both teams finished the day by tipping their caps both to each other and to the wonderful fans of Middle Village Queens. Until next time…..Huzzah!!!
