Old Dutch Day/Islip Town Cup

Gotham Base Ball Club of New York vs Flemington Neshanock vs Brooklyn Atlantics

Islip Grange

August 6, 2011

1864 rules

The Gotham BBC made the long carriage ride east to play base ball in memory of the Atlantics' Old Dutch and inaugurate the Islip Town cup. I should say, not nearly enough Gotham BBC players made the long carriage ride east to play base ball... However not all was lost, even though 5 Gotham players showed up, Dirt and Splinter from the Manetto Hill Surprise, Hawk and the rest of the Atlantics joined us to make a team. Thank you gentlemen.

The Gotham BBC began their day hosting the Flemington Neshanock, after the Neshanock lost to the Atlantics. The match began with the Neshanock scoring 0 aces and the Gotham BBC scoring 1 on Monk's booming 2 base hit to the 2nd base tender and crossing 4th base on Dreams' 1 base hit. In the top of the 2nd frame, center fielder Dirt made an amazing catch, 1 of 3 hands that kept the Neshanock scoreless. The Gotham BBC responded with 0 aces of their own. In the top of 3rd frame, the calvary came! Wickets showed up and replaced Dream and finally, the Gotham BBC had a true short stop. The arrival immediately paid off. A Neshanock hit a bomb and Keystone ran all the way back to left field. The ball took a very high bounce and Keystone caught it! Though the 1 bound catch was a bit sissyfied, it was pretty amazing nonetheless. The Gotham BBC kept the Neshanock off the scoreboard. The Gotham BBC scored 0 aces in their half of the frame.

In the top of the 4th frame, the Gotham BBC had some miscues and the Neshanock struck the ball well. By the end of that half of the frame, the Neshanock scored 2 aces and were up by 1. The Gotham BBC responded with 0 aces of their own. In the top of half of the 5th frame, the Neshanock scored 0 aces. In the bottom half of the 5th frame, the Gotham BBC received an assist from an iron carriage. Monk strolled to 3rd base on Dirt's walk. With Keystone at the line, the Neshanock catcher allowed the ball to go through his legs. The ball sailed over the hay backstop and careened off an iron carriage. Monk strolled across 4th base. Dirt would tally an ace after stealing 2nd base and coming home on Wickets' 1 base hit. In the bottom of the 6th frame with Stacks on the line and Hawk on 3rd base, Hawk realized he would be crowned Gotham of the Year if he stole 4th base. Unfortunately, the Neshanock's dastardly captain and pitcher, Brooklyn, would have no part of that crowning. Hawk booked to 4th base on the return throw to Brooklyn. Brooklyn adroitly got the ball and threw back to the catcher who applied a perfect tag on Hawk. Hawk will now be crowned, Gotham Underminer of the Year! Stacks hit a 1 base hit, stole 2nd and 3rd bases and was left there. At the end of the frame the score was Gotham BBC 3 Neshanock 2.

In the 7th frame the Neshanock scored 2 aces and the Gotham BBC scored 1. In the 8th frame, their roles were reversed with the Neshanock scoring 1 ace and the Gotham BBC scoring 2. With the Gotham BBC up by 1, the two teams entered the top of the 9th. A Neshanock made it all the way to 3rd base and scored on a walk. Tie game! To get the final two outs of that half of the frame, Stacks took a line drive to the chest; picked up the ball; threw to first to get the striker; Monk threw back to Wickets at 3rd base; and Wickets tagged the runner. Nice play and on to extra innings.

In the top of the 10th frame, the Gotham BBC, by way of many misplayed balls and walks, allowed 6 aces. Oh boy! In the bottom of the 10th frame, Stacks led off with a 2 base hit and scored on Monk's 1 base hit. Monk crossed 4th base on Dirt's 2 base hit. Dirt crossed 4th base on Keystone's 1 base hit. Unfortunately for the Gotham BBC, the next 3 strikers got out. End of game Gotham BBC 9 Flemington Neshanock 12.

Gotham BBC vs Brooklyn Atlantics sung to the tune of Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle"

Islip Grange

August 6, 2011

1864 rules

With the two teams signing "the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon...yadahyahdahydahdadad." The Atlantics struck first scoring 4 aces in the top half of their frame. In the bottom half of the 1st frame, the Mighty Tree took to the pitcher's mound to learn his son a lesson. The Gotham BBC scored 4 aces and were threatening more, when Splinter came to the mound. Tree did his finest Joan Crawford impersonation and proceeded to throw the ball at his own flesh and blood! The Gotham BBC showered Tree with a chorus of boos, but were shocked (and a little dismayed) into silence when we heard Tree yell "NO …WIRE...HANGERS. WHAT'S WIRE HANGERS DOING IN THIS CLOSET WHEN I TOLD YOU: NO WIRE HANGERS EVER?" Easy Cheesy. Sadly, Splinter hit it to his father for the last hand of the frame.

In the 2nd frame, the Atlantics scored 4 aces and the Gotham BBC scored 0. In the 3rd frame, the Atlantics scored 1 ace and the Gotham BBC scored 0. In the 3rd frame, the tables were turned on Daddy Dearest, when Splinter smacked a 1 base hit.

In the 4th frame, TC hit a screeching grounder to Splinter. Splinter snagged the ball and whipped it to 1st base, nailing the fleet footed TC. Nice play. Dirt made a great catch in center field to end the frame. However, the Atlantics scored 2 aces. The Gotham BBC scored 0. By the end of the 4th frame the score was Gotham BBC 4 Atlantics 11.

In the Gotham half of the 7th frame, Dirt was thrown out by the center fielder who was shading in left field. Good throw by the center fielder. In the 8th frame, the Atlantics scored 3 aces and the Gotham BBC scored 2. Splinter struck again, hitting a 1 base hit and scoring on well struck balls by Stacks, Monk and Keystone. Take that Pa!

Going into the 9th frame the score was Gotham BBC 7 and the Atlantics 18. The Atlantics batted out of order, 1 hand. They got another hand with a ground ball. Hawk was caught roaming off 2nd base by the hidden ball trick, 3rd hand. In the bottom of the 9th frame, Dirt nailed a perfect fair-foul strike. The Atlantic catcher ran after that ball and threw a perfect throw to get Dirt at 1st base. Great play. The Gotham BBC strikers hit into 2 hands and the game was over, final score Gotham BBC 7 and the Atlantics 18.
