8/4/2007 - Old Bethpage, NY - On a most perfect summer day the Gothams had their best ever start in the 2007 Old Bethpage Festival. The Day began with the Gothams stroking hit after hit to tally 10 aces before the Hartford Dark Blues were even able to bat for the first time. It was too much for the Hartford club to muster a comeback as the Gothams held on to coral their 2nd victory of the season by a final tally of 15-1. The 2nd game against Waterbury appeared to start in the same fashion as the first game as the Gothams had an early 3-0 lead, but the Waterbury club stormed back to win 13-4.
Game 1 vs. Hartford Dark Blues - 1864 Rules:
The Mighty Gothams stormed out with thunder and lightning to begin this festive event in Old Bethpage. Flytrap and Coach got the festivity started with back-to-back one-base hits in the top half of the 1st inning. After a walk to Dream Trolley, Flash, and Slider smashed consecutive 2-base hits followed by one base hits by Stacks, Wickets, Hanky, Dutch, Coach, and Scratch, sandwiched around a base on balls to Wombat. By the time the storm had cleared the Mighty Gothams held a 10-0 lead over the Hartford club…and the Hartford club had yet to bat!
Coach and the Gotham defenders took over the rest of the contest. Coach Chicagoed the Hartford club for the first 6 innings including the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th inning without even allowing a base runner. Coach even struck out a couple Hartford strikers. Scratch behind the plate, Dream at shortstop, Trolley at 2nd base and Wombat at 1st base made several fine plays on the field to keep the Dark Blues off the bases. Flytrap, Scratch and Dream combined one-base hits and several acts of thievery on the base paths to tally 2 aces in the 4th. Dutch, Wombat, Coach, and Scratch did the same in the 6th to tally 2 more times and Dream's 2-base hit combined with Trolley's one-base hit in the 7th tallied the 15th and final ace of the game for the Gothams. The Dark Blues only managed 1 ace during the entire contest.
Overall, the Gothams put out their best effort of the season in this 15-1 drubbing of the Hartford Dark Blues.

Game 2 vs. Waterbury Connors - 1865 Rules:
The Mighty Gothams 2nd game appeared to start in the same manor as their first game. The Gothams roared out to a 3-0 lead on one-base hits by Scratch, Coach and Wickets, with a base on balls to Dean thrown in the middle. Coach's fine pitching continued to baffle the opponents on this day as the Connors were Chicagoed in the first 2 innings. Of special note in the 2nd inning, Scratch made 2 fine plays on foul ticked balls behind the plate and Dream made a fine play at shortstop to thwart any chance of a tally for Waterbury. However, the Connors did take advantage of faulty Gotham field work in the 3rd frame to tally 3 times and tie the score at 3 after 3 innings were complete.
Unfortunately for the Gothams, the Waterbury pitcher shut down the Gotham strikers by Chicagoing them from innings 2-8 along with several acts of thievery with defensive stops by both their outfielders and their infielders. Coach Chicagoed the Connors in the 4th, but in spite of Gotham trickery in the 5th, the Connors tallied twice to take a lead they would not relinquish. The trickery occurred when after a Scratch caught a foul tick behind the plate for the 2nd out, he threw the ball into center field to entice the Connor on 2nd base to take off for 3rd, which he did. After Trolley, who called for this play, threw the ball to Dream at shortstop (not realizing the play he called for was on), Dream smartly threw the ball to Coach, the Gotham pitcher and back to Stacks at 2nd base to complete this long-winded double play.
The Connors added an ace in the 6th and 5 more in the 7th in spite of 2 fine fielding plays on line driver by the Gotham centerfielder Trolley. The Connors tallied twice more in the 8th to take a commanding 13-3 lead. The Gothams then proceeded to shoot themselves in the foot on the bases in their last batting attempt. After one-base hits by Dutch and Scratch, they were both put out on the bases trying to stretch an extra base. Dutch was put out at home and Scratch at 3rd. After Coach and Dream reached base safely, Trolley blasted a ground-rule two-base hit for the Gothams 4th and final ace, but it was not enough to catch the Connors in this 13-4 loss.
Overall, the Gothams played well on this fine day taking 1 of 2 in this festival. Until next time Huzzah!!
