Gotham Base Ball Club of New York vs Diamond State Base Ball Club of Delaware and Talbot Fair Plays
Gotham Base Ball Club of New York vs Elkton Eclipse and Chesapeake 9
August 20 & 21, 2011
After an exhausting carriage ride south (the North will rue the day we did not allow Staten Island to cede from the Union!), the Gotham BBC arrived to find a splendid 19th century extravaganza - base ball teams, beer, beautiful weather and perfect fields.
Gotham BBC vs Diamond State BBC of Delaware
Philadelphia Navy Yard
August 20, 2011
The Gotham BBC's first opponents were our most hated rivals the Diamond State Base Ball Club of Delaware. We started on the line. Three went up and three went down. In the bottom of the 1st frame, Diamond States struck some fan pleasing cracks and scored 2 aces. Scratch continued to practice his intentional drop of the fly ball to get the 2 hands in 1 and it still didn't work. In the top of the 2nd frame, Wickets crossed 4th base on a 1 base hit, theft of 2nd and strike by Bugs to score the Gotham BBC's first ace. In the bottom of the 2nd frame the Diamond States scored 2 aces. By the end of the 2nd frame the score was Gotham BBC 1 Diamond State 4.
In the 3rd frame, the Gotham BBC scored 3 aces. Keystone, Monk and Scratch would cross 4th base. This included 1 of 2 of Monk's cannon shot 3 base hits to the infield. In the bottom half of the 3rd frame, the Gotham BBC's defense hunkered down. A Diamond Stater struck the ball way too far into outfield. Crash gathered the ball up, threw to Scratch and Scratch threw a bullet to Monk at 4th base , who tagged the runner before he scored the ace. 1 hand. 2 aces later and with Diamond Staters on 1st and 2nd bases, the striker hit a ball to left field. Keystone ran full bore to get the ball. The runner on 2nd base ran to 3rd base. Keystone caught the ball on 1 bound, threw to 3rd base and Stacks tagged the runner out. 2 hands in 1 play! Even though the Diamond States scored 2 aces, the Gotham BBC made some very good plays to limit the damage. At the end of the 3rd frame the score was Gotham BBC 4 Diamond State BBC 6.
In the 4th frame, no team scored. However, the Gotham BBC played some mean spirited base ball. With a Diamond Stater on 3rd base, the striker struck a foul ball towards 1st base. Weed threw the ball over Stacks' head and we all cussed at Weed. The Diamond Stater took off to 4th base. Bugs walked to 3rd base and Stacks threw him the ball. (Actually as I write this I'm thinking that this probably doesn't reenact 1864 base ball very truly. Everyone who played base ball back then would have known that you can't run on a foul ball. I find it hard to believe that anyone would have fallen for that play. Though it does make for good banter with the cranks.)
In the 5th frame, Monk had his 2nd amazing 3 base hit and crossed 4th base on Wickets 1 base hit. Wickets stole 2 bases and crossed 4th base on Crash's 3 base hit. In the bottom half of the 5th frame, the Diamond States scored 0 aces. In the 6th frame, Stacks hit a 1 base hit. After 2 pitches, he took off to 2nd base. Meanwhile Muffin hit the ball foul and Stacks was caught standing proudly at 2nd base. No matter the Gotham BBC scored 3 aces that frame. In the 8th and 9th frames, Monk made sure the Diamond Staters scored no more aces by playing some very good defense behind 4th base. Twice he jumped off his feet to catch a foul ball. Great defense and well struck balls gave the Gotham BBC the win, Gotham BBC 9 Diamond State BBC 6.

Gotham BBC vs Talbot Fair Play
Philadelphia Navy Yard
August 20, 2011
After a brief hiatus, the Gotham BBC took the field to continue their 1 match winning streak and play their most hated rivals the Talbot Fair Play. Unfortunately, during that brief hiatus, the Gotham BBC forgot how to play defense. In the first 2 frames, the Talbot Fair Plays struck well but the Gotham BBC flung the ball around way too many times and the combination gave the Fair Plays 8 aces. In the third frame, the Gotham BBC finally buckled down and played some very good defense, but the Fair Plays struck some very well placed balls and scored 4 more aces. In the 2nd half of the 3rd frame, Keystone struck a ball to get to 1st base and stole 2nd. On Monk's hit to 3rd base, Keystone was surprised. The 3rd base tender gathered up the ball faked a throw to 1st base and Keystone ran to 3rd base, realized the 3rd base tender had the ball and ran back to 2nd base, but was tagged out by the 3rd base tender. Monk would eventually score on thefts and hands. By the end of the 3rd frame the score was Gotham BBC 1 Talbot Fair Play 12.
In the 4th frame, the Gotham BBC held the Fair Play to 0 aces, thanks to Scratch's beautiful play at short stop. A Fair Play striker hit a weak ground ball past the pitcher. Scratch ran to the ball. The striker ran hard to 1st base. Scratch picked up the ball, flung it to Weed at 1st base and got the striker by a hair! In the Gotham BBC half of the frame Crash scored 1 ace. In the 5th frame, the Fair Play scored 0 aces and Gotham BBC scored 2. Scratch had the first true 3 base hit of the Gotham BBC day (sorry Monk). In the 6th frame the Fair Play scored 2 aces and the Gotham BBC scored 3. By the end of the 6th frame the score was Gotham BBC 7 Talbot Fair Play 14.
In the 7th frame, no team scored. In the 8th frame, Bugs did his best Coach impersonation and achieved a hand by giving a Fair Play 1 warning and 3 strikes. In the bottom of the 8th frame, the Gotham BBC scored 5 aces by well struck 1 base hits and thefts by Stacks, Muffin, Keystone and Monk and another booming 3 base hit by Scratch. By the end of the 8th frame, the score was Gotham BBC 12 Talbot Fair Play 14.
In the 9th frame, the Fair Play scored 5 aces on well struck balls. The Gotham BBC would not score again. Game over Gotham BBC 12 Talbot Fair Play 19.
