Game 1 - Elizabeth Resolutes 17 - Gothams 3

Game 1 - 1873 Rules:

Rahway Park, NJ - On a beautiful day to play this fine game of base ball, the Gothams were anything but beautiful as the Resolutes gave the Gothams a sound thrashing by a final tally of 17-3.

Things were out of sorts from the start for this Gotham club, as only 7 Gothams made it for the opening inning, but thanks to Billy and Steve from the Resolutes for filling, the game was able to be played. Bobby the crafty Resolute hurler Chicagoed the Gothams in order in both of the first two innings and did not let a single Gotham reach his firsts until one hand was down in the 3rd inning. That first Gotham to reach base was in fact Billy, the Resolute substitute. Unused to having runners on base, especially those as fleet as Billy, Booby promptly balked him over to 2nd and sent him to 3rd on a wild pitch, but that is as far as he would go as the next 2 Gothams were put down to end the one man rally. Unfortunately for the Gothams, the Resolute bats were not sleeping as they proceeded to hit line drive after line drive to take a 6-0 lead after 3.

The only sign of hope for the Gothams was when the Resolute 1st base coach unknowingly fielded a fair ball and threw to the Gotham first base tender Shoeless for an out. The Gothams followed that up by again going down 1-2-3 in the 4th and only reaching base again in the 5th when Spike singled for the 1st Gotham hit by a Gotham. Meanwhile the Resolutes tallied another ace in the 4th and 5 more in the 5th to put the game out of reach, with the only highlight being a fine running catch of a popup in fouled territory by Gotham shortstop Genius. The Gothams finally managed to tally an ace in the 6th when David walked and after much prompting stole 2nd base. Singles by Shoeless and Scratch brought David to the plate to tally that first ace. Once again though, the Resolutes responded quickly for 5 more aces in the 6th to take an insurmountable 17-1 lead.

The Gothams slowly started to wake up (albeit to late) in the 7th when Spike singled Stole 2nd and moved to 3rd on Trolley's single and eventually tallied an ace on Weed's single. Either Spike's pitching finally was mystifying the Resolutes in the 7th and 8th innings or the Resolutes simply got too tired from running the bases, but in any event they were Chicagoed for the only two frames of the day. Special note to Weed, Spike, and Shoeless for turning a foul popup into a double play. After being Chicagoed again in the 8th, Spike repeated his feat again in the 9th, only this time the following singles were struck by Weed and David. The Gotham rally ended after a bit of controversy, when Shoeless hit a line drive down the 3rd base line for what appeared to be a ace-tallying hit, but the ball was called foul. A depleted Shoeless then fouled out to the catcher to end this putrid Gotham showing.

Simply put, the Resolutes severely outplayed the Gothams on this beautiful day. Until next time, Huzzah!
