Washington, DC - 7/7/2007 - The Gothams, along with the Flemington Neshanock and the Brooklyn Atlantics risked life and limb by descending by carriage and coach down south near Mason-Dixon line and the Confederate stronghold in the Union's capital of Washington, DC during these treacherous time to attempt to bring peace to our warring nation by playing base ball against 3 clubs from Maryland; The Elkton Eclipse, the Talbot Fairplays and the Chesapeake and Potomac base ball club. Despite the Gothams attempt at bringing peace to the south, both the Chesapeake and Elkton clubs fought off the Gothams by tallies of 8-6, and 18-13 (10 innings), respectively.
Game 1 vs. Chesapeake and Potomac Base Ball Club (1864 Rules):
The Gothams started off slowly on this very hot day by allowing 2 aces in the top of both the 1st and 2nd innings to take a 4-0 lead in spite of a fine sliding catch of a ball on the bound by Slider, the Gotham center fielder. The Gothams were Chicagoed in the first, but used some crafty base running to tally their 1st ace of the event in the 2nd inning. Bonesaw reached on a one-base hit, enticed the Maryland pitcher to balk him to 2nd, moved to 3rd on a Wombat single. Wombat and Bonesaw then worked a perfect double act of thievery as Bonesaw swiped home base as Wombat swiped 2nd to get the Gothams on the board. The 2 teams would proceed to tally single aces in each of the next 3 innings as the Gotham strikers began to strike the ball more vigorously and field the ball more succinctly at the same time. Wombat led the way by snaring several foul tips behind the plate, while Scratch, Stacks and Bonesaw also fielded their positions superbly. At the end of 5 frames, the Maryland club led 7-4.
The Gotham pitcher Stacks, as well as the Gotham fielders continued their excellence by chicagoing the Chesapeake team in order in the 6th highlighted by Wickets grabbing a hard hit ball on the fly at shortstop. Consecutive 1-base hits by Dash, Bonesaw, Wombat, and Wall allowed the Gothams to tally an ace in their half of the inning, in spite of Dash being put out at 3rd on a fine play by the Chesapeake left fielder. The top half of the 7th frame ended in excitement as the Gothams captain Trolley bobbled the ball about 45 times at 3rd base before finally putting it to rest in his hands to again Chicago the Maryland club. Thanks to the hitting ability and quick feet of Scratch to the Gothams got to within an ace of Chesapeake, by reaching on a one-base hit swiping 2 bases and tallying on a bound out by Trolley to make the score 7-6 after 7 innings in the home teams favor.
Both teams were Chicagoed in the 8th. Stacks even retired a Chesapeake batter on strikes during the frame, but the big play was when Scratch threw the ball to Wickets who relayed to ball to Bonesaw to put a Chesapeake runner out at 2nd base to end the top of the 8th. The 9th was a different story though as the Chesapeake hurler took matters into his own hands……and feet! He reached first on a one base hit, then stole 2nd, stole 3rd, and even stole home to put his team up by 2 aces. In the bottom of the 9th the Chesapeake hurler Chicagoed the Gothams on only one hit to fortify their winning margin of 8-6.
Overall, these two clubs displayed one of the finest battles you will see, but this victory went to the South.

Game 2 vs. Elkton Eclipse (1864 rules):
The afternoon grew much hotter as the Gothams moved to a field without shade to play their 2nd match of the day against the Eclipse. The newest member of the Gotham club known as Waterboy did all he could to keep the Mighty Gothams hydrated in this fierce heat by providing the players with a mysterious elixir that proved quite effective. The only problem was that the Gothams refused to try this elixir until after the Elkton club batted in the first. At first it looked like the Gotham's excellent fielding would continue as the first Elkton batter was put out by Wickets catching an extremely hard hit fly ball at shortstop, but then the dreaded Gotham inning occurred. A combination of well struck balls by the Elkton club mixed in with some porous Gotham fielding led to 5 Eclipse aces before the Gothams even came to bat. After realizing the wisdom of Waterboy, the Gothams lined up to drink the mysterious elixir and what an impact it had. Hammer led off the inning with a 3-base hit and scored on a base on balls to Wickets. Scratch followed with a 3-base hit of his own, then Trolley, Stacks, Wombat, Dash, Brooklyn, Hammer and Wickets each reached safely with 1-base hits to give the Gothams a 6-5 lead after 1 inning!
Things settled down a bit after the exciting 1st frame as the Eclipse tallied an ace in each of the next 2 frames while at the same time Chicagoing the Gothams. In those frames, Hammer and Scratch each made fine plays in the outfield, but the Gotham outfielders could not stop the consecutive 4-base hits by 2 Elkton outfielders, one of which has been rumored to have accepted money to play for another team in the recent past. In spite of this questionable practice, the game continued with Elkton ahead 10-6 after 4 frames.
Stacks fine pitching in conjunction with the excellent Gotham fielding only allowed 2 Elkton aces over the next 4 frames. Wombat started a double-play in the 5th by using his quick hands to catch a foul tick and quickly threw the ball to Stacks while falling down on his behind, who in turn fired to ball to Irv at 1st to thwart a wayward Eclipse runners attempt to return to his base. Outfielders, infielders and Wombat played flawlessly to keep the Gothams in the game. The Gothams tallied an ace in the 5th on a 2-base hit by Bonesaw, a base on balls by Irv, and a one-base hit by Hammer. One-base hits by Bonesaw and Wombat in the 7th helped the Gothams tally another ace in the 7th to bring the tally to 12-8 in favor of the Elkton club…but then the fun began.
After Stacks Chicagoed Elkton in the 8th, the Gothams drank more of Waterboy's elixir and tallied 4 aces before any hands were down on one-base hits by Wickets and Scratch, bases on balls to Trolley and Stacks, a 2-base hit by Bonesaw, and 2 more one-base hits by Wombat and Dash, which tied the score at 12 each and left a Gotham at every base without any hands down. It looked like the North may come up victorious, but then tragedy struck. Irv was put out on a foul tick and then Hammer was put out on a foul bound out and the quick thinking Elkton club threw the ball to their pitcher and back to 3rd base before Bonesaw could return to end the inning and thwarted the Gothams attempt to take the lead. Although Irv made an excellent play at first base to put out the Eclipse's paid player, the Elkton club managed to tally an ace in the 9th to give them a 1 ace lead. A 2-base hit by Dash and a one-base hit by Hammer tallied a single ace by the Gothams to tie the score at 13 each after 9 full innings were played.
After much protest by Wombat, the Gotham catcher, a 10th inning was decided to be played. It turns out that that decision was a mistake for the Mighty Gothams. The mystical powers of Waterboy's elixir finally wore off, which of course led to another Gotham inning. After all was said and done, the Elkton club tallied 5 aces in the 10th in spite of Irv again putting out the Eclipse's paid player at 1st with a fine play. But that would be all for the Gothams as they were Chicagoed in their half of the 10th to succeed another victory to the South.
Overall, the Gothams and the 2 Maryland clubs battled hard on this hot day in the Union's capital city, but the Gothams came up on the south side of the score to the South each time. As difficult as it is to say, we had to congratulate the Southern squads. Until next time…Huzzah!!
