Kingwood, NJ - 7/25/2009 - The Gothams travelled far by coach to the beautiful countryside of Kingwood, NJ to play 2 matches against their opponents the Newark Eureka. As always, two fine played matches were played by these two clubs. The Mighty Gothams were victorious twice more by tallies of 15-8 and 13-2, to bring their string of victories to 5 on this glorious summer day.
Game 1 - 1864 Rules:
The Gothams struck early in this fine match. El Presidente began the match with a one-base hit, which was easily followed by his 1st of many thefts this afternoon. One-base hits by Coach, Ringer and Trolley brought home 2 Gotham aces in the opening frame. Newark came right back with a tally of their own in their half inning. El Presidente again led off the 2nd frame with a one base hit and a theft of 2nd before tallying on Stacks one-base hit to put the Gothams up by 2. However, the Newark club bounced right back to tally twice in the 2nd and thrice in the 3rd, whist the Gothams failed to tally to take a 6-3 lead after 3 frames were complete.
The Gotham strikers awoke mightily in the 4th to tally and tally again and again. Scratch, Coach and Ringer began the attack with one-base hits and theft after theft on the base paths, which were followed by 2 outs by Trolley and Dutch, but then the onslaught began. El Presidente reach 1st safely, then promptly swiped his 3rd and 4th bases on the day, which was followed by a base on balls to Stacks, one-bases hits by Scratch and Coach, another base on balls by Ringer and a final one base hit by Trolley and before the Eureka knew what had occurred, the Gothams tallied 8 times to reclaim a lead they would not relinquish as Coach would Chicago the Newark club for the next 4 frames, whilst the Gotham strikers would not stand still. El Presidente again opened the 5th frame with a one base hit followed by two base thefts to bring his total to 6 on the day and he tallied again on Stacks daisy cutter. Ringer started off the 6th frame by extorted a base on balls from Melky, the crafty pitcher from Newark, swiped 2 bases and tallied on El Presidente's 4 hit of the day. El Presidente did not rest easy on 1st as he swiped 2nd for his 7th steal, continued to 3rd on Stacks one-base hit, then pilfered home base as part of a double theft with Stacks to bring his total to 5 aces and 8 thefts! Before we looked up, the Gothams lead had been advanced to 14-6.
The Gotham strikers were then put at bay by Melky as he Chicagoed the Gothams in the 7th and 8th innings, whilst the Newark club tallied twice in the 8th. The last bit of adventure for the Gothams was when after 2 hands were down in the 9th, El Presidente reached 1st safely for the 6th time and moved to 2nd on an errant throw. He then entered a special place in Gotham history by galloping to 3rd for his 9th theft of the match and continued to gallop home on another errant throw to tally his 6th and the matches final ace of the game. Coach held the Eureka scoreless again in the 9th to preserve the Gotham victory by a final tally of 15-8. As both clubs were walking off the field, the fans were standing in applause for El Presidente's magnificent game. He finished with 6 hits in 8 times at the line, with 9 stolen bases and 6 aces tallied! His game was so special, Ringer's 8 thefts were almost unrecognized.

Game 2 - 1864 Rules:
The 2nd match of the day began more modestly as the Eureka tallied once in the top of the 1st. The Gothams took advantage of rare inaccuracy by the Newark hurler Melky as Scratch reached on a base on balls. Swiped 2 bases and tallied on a base on balls to Coach. Both Coach and Melky Chicagoed the opposing team in the 2nd, whilst Coach did so again in the 3rd. The Gothams once again built a big inning in the 3rd, which was started by Stacks reaching on a one-base hit, pilfering 2nd and tallying his ace on a one base hit by Scratch. Coach followed with a 2-base hit to allow Scratch to Tally and tallied an ace himself on a one base hit by Trolley. El Presidente, Stacks and Scratch all followed with one base hits and a theft of 2nd base to lead to 5 aces in the inning and a 6-1 lead after three innings were complete.
Coach again held Newark without a tally in the 4th, whilst Ringer, El Presidente, Stacks, and Scratch each reached safely in their half inning with Ringer and El Presidente again each pilfering 2 bases. Both clubs failed to tally in the 5th and both tallied once each in the 6th. The Gotham ace was tallied when El Presidente again reached on a one-base hit, swiped 2nd base and tallied on a fly out to left by Scratch to increase the Gotham lead to 9-2. Coach would Chicago the Newark club for the remainder of the match. But the Gothams would continue to pad their lead after Melky Chicagoed them in the 7th, by combining one base hits by Stacks, Scratch, Coach, Ringer, and Trolley to tally 4 more times to bring the final score to 13-2 in the Gothams favor.
The day was highlighted by fine pitching by Coach and several acts of excellent field work by Ringer, the Gotham Left Fielder, and Scratch the Gotham Catcher, but clearly the Gotham star of the Day was el Presidente. He finished the afternoon, with 9 hits, 9 aces and 13 stolen bases, which allows one to almost overlook the 12 bases stolen by Ringer. As always, the event was festive and friendly between these two clubs. Until Next time…Huzzah!
