Game 1 - Brooklyn Atlantics 11 - Gothams 5

Game 2 - Gothams 6 - Brooklyn Atlantics 5

Game 1 - 1864 Rules:

Smithtown, NY - It was a day of firsts for the Gothams today…One bad and one good. The bad news first was the Gothams falling under .500 (5-6) for the first time this year after losing the opening game to the Brooklyn Atlantics by an 11-5 tally. The good news was that the after 13 failed attempts, the Gothams won the second game by a 6-5 tally to record their first ever win vs. the Atlantics!

The Gothams got off to a good start with 2 aces in the top of the first on Coach's single and Sparky's 2nd home run in as many games to take the Gothams only lead of the game. The Atlantics came roaring back in their half of the inning by taking advantage of a few Gotham miscues (partially due to Scratch having a full frontal lobotomy the prior week, which temporarily effected his ability to catch bouncing balls) with some timely hits to tally 5 aces and take a 5-2 lead that they would not relinquish. The Gothams and the Atlantics were Chicagoed in the 2nd inning with Stacks mowing down the Atlantic in order in their half inning. The Gothams were Chicagoed again in the 3rd while the Atlantics tallied 2 more aces for a 7-2 lead after 3 innings.

The 4th inning was a Trolley inning. Trolley singled with 2 outs, stole 2nd and 3rd tallied his ace on a passed ball for the Gothams lone ace of the inning. In the bottom half of the inning, after the Atlantic shortstop (Dean the Dream) took what appeared to be 743 pitches down the middle without being called out on strikes, Trolley questioned whether a we should set the ball on a tee to be swung at. The Atlantic shortstop then swung at the next Stacks offering only to be thwarted of a hit when Trolley caught the ball on a bound in the right center field gap. The Gothams and Atlantics were both Chicagoed again in the 5th, with the highlight being your typical 8-7 bound out, with the ball bouncing on the ground off Trolley's finger tips and into the waiting hands of Scratch for an out. Slider generated an ace in the 6th with a single, then reaching 2nd on a passed ball, stealing 3rd and scoring on Scratch's bound out to right field. Unfortunately for the Gothams, the Atlantics tallied 3 more times to take an 11-4 lead.

The Gothams were wilting in the sun and heat and were Chicagoed in both the 7th and 8th Innings while the Atlantics were Chicagoed as well in the 7th, but managed to tally another ace in the 8th. Spike managed to single, steal 2nd & 3rd, and score on a passed ball in the top of the 9th, but that would be all for the Gothams as they fell to 5-6 with this 11-5 loss.

Game 2 - 1864 Rules:

The Gothams got off to a much better start in game 2. Coach, pitching for the first time, retired the Atlantics in order in the top of the first. Slider led off the Gothams half of the inning with a single, but was gunned down at 2nd by a nice throw by the Atlantic right fielder on the back end of a double play when Scratch was out on a bound to right. Sparky then got things started again with a 2-out triple (with Scratch filling in as a runner because of Sparky's pulled hammy). Coach then drove him home with a double. The highlight of the came in the 2nd though when Stacks somehow managed to pluck the ball out of thin air as it fell through the tree branches in center field for an out. He followed that up with an amazing one hand grab of a ball on the bound for the 3rd out of another inning in which Coach Chicagoed the Atlantics. The Atlantics tied it up at 1-1 in the 3rd inning, while the Gothams were chicagoed again in the bottom of the inning.

The Atlantics added 1 ace in the 4th and 2 more in the 5th, while the Gothams were Chicagoed in 1-2-3 fashion for 2 consecutive innings, but it could have been worse if it weren't for coach picking off a runner at 2nd base, leaving the Atlantics with a 4-1 lead. The Mighty Gothams however would not quit! Coach Chicagoed the Atlantics in the top of the 6th with the help of Sparky's catch of a line drive at 1st base and his own pickoff throw to nail the Atlantic shortstop at 2nd base. As the Gothams have been want to do on this hot afternoon, they used a one-man show again to tally their 2nd ace of the game. Homer singled, moved to 2nd on a passed ball, moved to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored on Stacks bound out to right, to bring the Gothams within 2 of the Atlantics.

The Atlantics were Chicagoed again in the 7th as the Atlantic hurler Trotter was thrown out stealing 3rd by Trolley for the 2nd out to help thwart any rally that the Atlantics could muster. The Gothams then exploded for 3 Aces in the bottom of the 7th to take a lead they would not let fall. Slider led off with a single and then moved to 2nd on Trotter's balk (much to the dismay of The Dream, who thought Coach balked earlier in the game when he was picked off), and to 3rd on a stolen base. Sparky then singled in Slider from 3rd to get the Gothams within 1 ace. Scratch (running for Sparky), stole 2nd and scored on Coaches single to tie the game up at 4. The final ace of the inning was tallied by Coach on a single by Spike. Coach then Chicagoed the Atlantics one more time in the 8th, before Ironweed generated an ace with a single, a passed ball and finally a throwing error by the Atlantic pitcher to give the Gothams a very important extra ace to lead by 2.

The Atlantics had the top of their order up in the 9th to make one last rally. Toothpick led off with a fly out to Muffin in center field and TC followed that with a ground out to Spike at short. The Atlantics weren't finished yet either though. The Dream, Flash, and Trotter strung consecutive singles to get within 1 ace and placed a runner on 3rd base all with 2 hands down, but the rally was struck down when Coach induced Shakespeare to fly out to Scratch in left field for the final out. Yes it's true, The Mighty Gothams have finally beaten our older brother's, the Atlantics for the first time! Huzzah!
