Morristown, NJ - 7/12/2008 - The Mighty Gothams traveled far by coach on this swelteringly hot summer day to play their rivals from New Jersey, the Flemington Neshanock, on a beautiful field in Morristown. The Gothams arrived having won 4 straight matches against New Jersey Clubs including 2 against Flemington. However, the Flemington Captain Brooklyn, rallied his men with a thunderous speech, that to some sounded like Casey at the bat, but nevertheless the speech was effective as the Neshanock defeated the Gothams by a final tally of 8-6 ending both the Gothams winning streak and the Neshanock losing streak.
Game 1 - 1864 Rules:
The Gothams got off to a quick start in this match when Stacks reached on a one-base hit, pilfered 2nd base and tallied his ace on a wild pitch from Melky before the New Jersey club came to bat. Flemington would not stand pat though, they tallied twice n their half of the inning, but it could have been much worse were it not for the fine field work displayed by Stacks. He snared a daisy cutter up the middle stepped on 2nd base for the first hand to start the first of 3 Gotham double plays of the afternoon and threw swiftly to Trolley at first for the 2nd hand and a 3rd hand was almost had when Trolley threw to Flytrap at home plate just a tad too late to catch the runner. One base-hits and acts of thievery by Shades, Trolley and Gary led to 2 Gotham aces in the 2nd and a short-lived lead. The Neshanock came right back with an ace and again were thwarted of additional tallies by fine Gotham fieldwork. Coach caught a short fly for a hand and promptly threw to Stacks at 2nd for the 2nd double play of the afternoon leaving the tally at 3 all after 2 frames.
The two pitchers then settled down as Melky Chicagoed the Gothams for the next 2 innings, whilst Coach matched him for 2 innings again with the aid of the Gotham fielders. In the 3rd, the Gotham 3rd base tender Gary ran down a foul pop caught it, dropped it, but caught it again prior to the 2nd bound for an out. Collector followed up this play with a cleanly fielded ball in Left followed by a strong throw to 1st to put the fleet-footed (possibly web-footed) Melky out and end the inning. In the 4th Trolley snared an errant throw from the 3rd base tended with one hand while leaning into foul ground for an out. The Gothams were to make the Flemington club earn their aces this match.
The Neshanock did break through again in the 5th with an ace to take a 4-3 lead, but back-to-back 2-base hits by Coach and Dog led to a Gotham ace and another tie in the 6th. Flemington tallied once in their half of the 6th and twice more in the 7th to take a 7-4 lead. A 2-base hit by Gary and a one-base hit by Coach led to a Gotham ace in the 8th to get the Gothams closer, but the Neshanock did the same in their half inning. The Gothams did however manage to master their 3rd double play when Trolley grabbed a one-bound smash at 1st and threw to Stacks at 2nd to place the tag on the runner to complete the twin killing. The Gothams then entered the final frame down by 3 aces. Frosty led off with a base on balls, deftly swiped both 2nd and 3rd base and tallied his ace on Trolley's one base hit, but that was all the Mighty Gothams could muster as they fell short to the victorious and splendiferous Flemington Club by a final tally of 8-6.
In all a fine match of base ball was played by these two rivals and one streak ended and a new one began. Until next time…Huzzah!!!
