Game 1 - Flemington Neshanock 19 - Gothams 17
What started as a walk through the town ended with a ride to the hospital. The Gothams played this week in the lovely town of Chester, NJ against our formidable foes from Flemington. The day started well as both teams walked through the tiny town to encourage the local town folk to come see some real base ball. After a rousing rendition of Casey at the Bat by Brooklyn from the Flemington squad the game began. Your hometown heroes got off to a quick start in the top of the first with a single by Shoeless and the first homerun of the Gotham season by Digits. The Nashanooks quickly posted 2 runs in their half of the first to tie the score. The match was a seesaw battle with both teams trading aces back and forth until the eighth inning. With the score tied 16 - 16 and two outs Shoeless lashed a mighty single to the outfield, he quickly stole second and was on his was to stealing third when "POP" , his hamstring gave out and was tagged out at third. Shoeless was helped off of the field and was eventually carried off on a gurney to a 21 bat salute. With heavy hearts, hands and a townie at short the Gothams returned to the field and after a quick out gave up three runs to our opponents. The Gothams were able to scratch out one run in their half of the ninth but fell to the mighty Flemington team 19 - 17. Offensive stars of the game Digits with his mighty homerun, Quickstep of Elizabeth went 4/5 with a triple and double and 3 stolen bases. Defensive star of the game Digits who made two nice plays at third in the fourth inning. Thanks to Tripod for coming out to help us and completing his first game of Vintage Base Ball with no broken fingers.
