Things started off bleak for the Mighty Gothams on this beautiful Saturday afternoon in Chester, New Jersey. The cranks were anxious watching the infamous "Gotham Inning" unfold in the top of the first as the Flemington Neshanock tallied 6 aces while batting around the order with help from the holes inserted in the gloveless Gotham's hands. The Gothams inched back into the game with an ace in the bottom of the firsts thanks to the fleet-footed Slider reaching his firsts safely on a hit then stealing both second and third base before coming home on Mixer's groundout. (Note that Mixer has expressed interest in being renamed Daisi, yes that is Daisy with an "I", reasons to be discussed at future games). The holes in the Gotham's hands were repaired as the Neshanock were Chicagoed in both the second and third innings, while the Gothams tallied 2 more aces in the second on a flurry of singles and stolen bases by Spike, Kid, and Rugs.
The Mighty Gothams bats really woke up in the 3rd inning as 5 aces were tallied to put the Gothams up 8-6. After Homer reached on a Flemington misplay, Slider smashed a triple in the gap, and was quite upset at the missed opportunity to steal more bases! Daisi & Trolley singled followed by Flemington misplays and a walk to Kid to bring in the final 3 aces. Flemington marched right back with 6 more aces in the 4th on another "Gotham Inning" of high jinx and miscues on the field to take a 12-8 lead. The Mighty Gothams revenged their poor play in the top of the inning with a 6 ace outburst in the bottom of the fourth to take a 14-12 lead that would not be relinquished. Stacks and Slider started things off with singles, but the rally looked to be thwarted early when Daisi hit a foul ball while Slider was stealing 3rd and was then put out at second by not beating that ball back to the bag! Daisi redeemed himself with a single before the mighty blast of a 4-bagger by Scratch, the Gothams first home run of the young season. Singles by Sparky, Spike, and Kid surrounded a double by Trolley to account for the final 3 aces of the inning.
The Neshanock were Chicagoed again in the 5th and 6th Innings, while singles by stacks and Slider, followed by 3 consecutive walks to Daisi, Scratch and Sparky added 2 more aces in the 5th to extend the Gotham lead to 16-12. The Gothams were Chicagoed for the only time in the 6th inning, but more than made up for that omission later. The Neshanock tallied twice in the 7th to draw within 2 at 16-14, but the proverbial floodgates were opened in the bottom of the 7th as the Mighty Gothams tallied 7 more aces to increase their lead to 23-14. Homer and slider started to opening of the floodgates with a single and a walk, but the water came pouring through steadily when Daisi brought them both home with his first double of his career. Scratch and Sparky followed with singles, Trolley and Spike then reached base on fielder's choices, followed by Kid's 3rd walk of the game and singles by Mugsy and Rugs closed out the scoring.
The last attempt to get back in the game for the Neshanock was made in the 8th inning when they tallied 3 more aces to get within 6 at 23-17, but not without controversy. The inning ended on a rather strange double play started when Stacks struck out the striker with the bases loaded and one man out. Spike appeared to step on home for the first out and then promptly threw the ball past Sparky at first allowing another Neshanock to tally an ace. Hammer of the Neshanock raced towards home aggressively but was halted by a fine throw by Slider and a nice catch by Spike at the plate for the apparent 3rd out as all players left the field for the bottom of the inning. But wait a minute, the umpire ruled that Spike never stepped on home plate for the 2nd out, but the inning was still over because the Flemington runner on base left the field and was deemed out of the baselines for the final out. The double play was the Gothams second of the game as Trolley fielded a grounder at 3rd base, stepped on the bag and threw to first earlier in the game for the first one. Every Gotham except Slider, Trolley and Stacks singled in the bottom of the inning to tally 7 more aces to bring the score to its final total of 30-17 as the Neshanock were again Chicagoed in the 9th.
The 30 aces are a new Gotham record and leave our season record at 2-1 which is the latest in the season that the Mighty Gothams have remained at .500 or above. Also notable in the match was a fine sliding catch by Scratch and an excellent throw by Daisi to nail a runner at the plate, even though his Captain was yelling at him to throw to second for the force out. Stacks also pitched a fine game and this time did not incur the wrath of his catcher Spike. Overall, and excellent hitting display was put on for the cranks watching the game on this beautiful afternoon…yes a very beautiful afternoon!
