Game 1 - Gothams 19 - Hempstead Eurekas 17

Game 2 - New York Mutuals 10 - Gothams 6

It's my pleasure to pass on a quite favorable summary of today's games.

Game 1 vs. Hempstead Eurekas:

For the first time in the history of this vintage Base Ball incarnation of the New York Gothams, we have climbed above the .500 level with an opening day victory over the Eureka's by a 19-17 score. Yes it is true…The Mighty Gothams are 1-0! It was a slow start as the Gothams were Chicagoed in the first, but a fine defensive play in the bottom of the first by Spike, catching a foul tip and quickly getting the ball back to Stacks and on to second base to double-up the runner that was attempting to steal when the foul was struck to keep the deficit down to 1-0. The Gothams tallied their first ace of the season on a single by Shoeless, a fielder's choice by Digits, which was quickly followed by 2 stolen bases (Slider was instantly upset at falling behind the lead in SBs). Digits tallied his ace on a bound out to left by Kid. After Chicagoing Hempstead in the 2nd, the Gothams exploded for 5 aces in the 3rd on a string of singles by Trolley, Mixer, Stacks, Slider, Spike, and Sparky and a double by Scratch. The inning included a flurry of stolen bases by Trolley and Mixer, leaving Slide further behind the lead. The only blemish was a base-running blunder by Sparky of over-running at 1st base…a 25 cent fine will be requested at the next match! Hempstead added 2 more aces in their half of the inning follow by the Gothams getting Chicagoed in the 4th, which was aided by Kid being the first 2005 victim of the hidden ball trick. The 5th inning was much better as Slider got things going with a walk….and yes….finally a couple of stolen bases! Scratch, Sparky, Digits, and Kid followed with singles and more stolen bases to tally 4 more aces. The bottom of the 5th however led to the infamous Gotham inning as Trolley, Sparky, and Stacks combined to juggles base balls in more ways than any human though possible..we acted as goal posts without a goalie, throwing the ball as if our limbs were stapled to the ground and easily could have made ESPNs "Not Top Ten" if that was around in 1864. All in all Hempstead tallied 8 aces to take a 12-10 lead. However, the Gotham defense improved immensely thereafter, as Hempstead was Chicagoed for the next 3 innings, with the highlight being Spike 3 straight caught foul tips in the 6th for an all Spike inning. Mixer created an ace all on his own in the 6th on a single a couple of Stolen Bases and a passed ball. Singles by Shoeless, Kid and Rugs, plus doubles by Sparky and Trolley led to 4 more Gotham aces in the 7th. Stacks, Scratch, and Sparky strung together 3 singles and a couple of stolen bases to tally 2 more aces in the 8th. Kid, Rugs, and Trolley each singled and stole 2 bases to tally 2 more aces in the 9th. The last scare of the game cam in the bottom of the 9th when Hempstead tallied 5 times to close within 2 for the final score of 19-17. Ironically enough, this was the 4th consecutive victory for the mighty Gothams at Old Bethpage.

Game 2 vs. New York Mutuals

Although the Gothams played a fine defensive game, the Mutuals were able to avenge their loss to the Gothams from a year ago with a 10-6 victory over the Gothams. Thus, ending the Gothams 4 game Old Bethpage winning streak. It was a dismal start as the Mutuals tallied 4 aces in the top of the 1st to take the lead for good. The Gothams were Chicagoed rather meekly in first 3 innings. However, due to fine defensive play by the Gothams, the Mutuals were also Chicagoed over the next 3 innings. Scratch and mixed tracked all flying things down in the outfield while Sparky and Digits handled all the daisy cutters on the infield. The Gothams finally got on the board with 2 aces in the 4th when Spike reached on an error and Scratch and Shoeless followed with singles around a Sparky bound out to centerfield. Scratch hustled to score from 2nd Base on Shoeless' single. The Gothams however were again Chicagoed in 3 of the next 4 innings, while allowing 6 more Mutual aces in the final 5 frames. The only Gotham ace was tallied on a double by Scratch and a single by Shoeless in the 7th. All throughout, the Gothams played fine defense and were only undone by well placed balls by the Mutuals. Slider chipped in with a nice catch in right field and Trolley chimed in with a few caught foul tips. The Mighty Gothams made a valiant comeback attempt in the bottom of the 9th as Stacks, Spike, Scratch, Sparky, and Shoeless all singled to tally 3 more times before Digits and Kid ended the rally, leaving the final score of 10 -6 as well as the NY/NJ cup in the hands of the Mutuals. No need to hang our heads though as we played very well, but just not quite as well as our opponent. This was clearly an enlightening start to a new season. HUZZAH!!
