Game 1 - New York Mutuals 21 - Gothams 10

Game 2 - New York Mutuals 36 - Gothams 4

With the wind whipping, the temperature dropping and rain spattering their faces ( and the barely legible score sheet) the Gotham Base Ball Club went to battle for the final weekend this season. And, as usual....

Game 1:

A hard fought battle- well played on both sides. Good defense by Trolley at third in the third and great diving play by Tuck in center in the 9th were highlights of a game in which we were simply outplayed. The Mutual Hook and Ladder company team outhit, outfielded and generally outplayed our boys. Never gave up more than 4 runs in an inning and even Chicagoed them in the 4th and 8th. But even with doubles by Spike, Booth and Buster, the best we could muster was 4 in the 7th , 3 in the 1st and 1 in 3rd, 4th and 8th. A strange double play also cost us a run or two in the 4th when Game Face struck out with the bases loaded. The Mutual catcher dropped the ball on the thrid strike. By 1864 rules a batter is required to make his 1st base on a dropped third strike- regardless of whether or not it- or any other base is occupied- whih means all runers must vacate their base on a dropped third strike if forced. The catcher alertly picked up the ball, stepped on home and threw the ball to the pitcher (not necessary but he did it anyway) and then on to first for the double play - ending the inning. Bummer!

Final score 21-10

Game 2: "Can't anyone here play this game?"

After a good start, scoring two in the top of the 1st and 1 in the 2nd- exra base hits by Tuck and Booth were about all we mustered in this game. Our defense left us and went to Maguire's to wait for us before the game even started. We allowed 3 in the 1st, 3 in the second, 6 in the 4th and then I lost track!! I'm pretty certain they scored at least 36 aces to our 4.

Nice work umpiring by both Rugs and Spike.

I'll have final season record and stats in the next few days.

All in all- a good season and I want to thank each and every one of you for playing, umpiring, and supporting the Gotham club. It was a pleasure to be on the same field with you all and I hope you will all continue with us next season.
