Game 1 - NY Mutuals 19 - Gothams 10
A fine game of Base Ball was played today in our substitute home field of Brewster, New York. The mighty Gothams played valiantly for much of the game but were eventually thwarted a victory by the fine striking of timber by the Mutuals of New York by a final score of 19-10. The Mutuals got things started early with 3 aces in the top of the 1st. Spike used his scouting expertise to mix up the lineup by putting together a strong start to the game, therefore, the Gothams were Chicagoed 1-2-3 style in the bottom of the first. After Chicagoing the Mutuals in the top of the second the Gotham s tied the game up with 3 tallies of their own in the bottom of the inning. Walker started things off with a well-struck double, Rugs brought him home with a single and Homer followed that hit with a double to the left-centerfield gap and Shoeless and Quickstep finished things off with 2 more singles. The Mutuals added 2 more aces in the top of the 3rd, but the Gothams came through again with 4 more aces in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-5 lead after 3. Walker started things off again with a single, then promptly stole 2nd and 3rd, Rugs, Homer, Mark, and Shoeless followed with singles to make the score 6-5 Gothams. The last run was tallied more creatively, Quickstep was out on a bound to the pitcher and Shoeless got caught in a rundown long enough to allow Mark to score from 3rd. The Mighty Gothams went downhill from there. The Mutuals tallied 2 times in the 4th and 6 more times in the 5th while the Gothams were Chicagoed twice to take the lead for good. 5 more aces from the Mutuals in the 6th put them up 18-7. Singles by Shoeless, Spike, Walker, and Rugs brought in another 2 aces for the Gothams in the 6th. The Gothams floundered on a big opportunity in the 7th when Spike, Trolley, and Walker all failed to bring home an ace with the bases loaded and no hands. The Gothams last ace came in the 8th on a single by Rugs and a double by Mark.
The 19 runs scored by the Mutuals was by no fault of the Gotham defense which played exceptionally well. The outfield of Quickstep, Walker, and Mark all fielded flawlessly. Walker even turned in 2 double-plays with a catch and an assist by throwing a runners out at 3rd and Home respectively. Rugs made a great stop of a line drive at the mound with his forearm and then threw the runner out at first. Trolley caught a line drive and stepped on 3rd for an unassisted double-play after the umpire missed a call on the hidden ball trick at 3rd. Spike also caught a line drive at short and threw to 3rd for an apparent double-play, but was foiled again by the umpire.
A final thanks to Rugs and Marina for hosting a beautiful BBQ gala in their Brewster home.
